Accommodation for Refugees in Turkey

Turkey is home to 3,5 million refugees. They generally have two options for asylum. The Syrians can stay in asylum centers or they can rent houses for themselves.

There are 22 asylum centers for Syrian refugees in Turkey. Total number of refugees living in these centers managed by Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD) is 227,075. The centers are located in ten different cities including Hatay, Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Kilis, Mardin, Kahramanmaras, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Adana, Malatya.

The Syrians who do not live in these centers, must primarily decide into which city they will register. Urban Syrian refugees in Turkey are required to reside in the cities that they are registered. They can change cities they live in only through the permission that they can receive from Provincial Immigration Authorities.

Therefore, they need to pay attention to the possibilities of housing when choosing the city to be registered. It is absolutely necessary to investigate the situation of the real estate market in the city.

In addition new registrations to Istanbul, which is the home to the majority of the Syrians, have been stopped.

The following information can be useful for the Syrians living in Istanbul. The presence of a large number of residences, particularly in Bagcilar and Basaksehir districts on European side increases the chances of the Syrians to find a place to stay in these areas.
